As in most tropical climates, there are two seasons in Hawai’i, the cooler wetter season called Ho’oilo, and the hotter, drier season called Kau. Both seasons last about six months. Council panel reviewing bills on sand mining

An official from Maui Lani Partners said Monday that the company has been “taking material off-site since 1994” and that the county’s warning to stop grading and excavating sand two months ago “was the first time we were made aware there was a notice of warning on a potential violation on the property.”

Construction Boom Threatens Maui’s Pristine Sand

Maui’s pristine beaches and vast inland sand dune system are threatened as a booming construction industry digs out tons of sand to mix for concrete. Jesse Hardman reports on the the fight on the popular Hawaiian island over the precious resource.

Rob Parsons says more than 2 million tons of inland sand is excavated every year, and the majority of it isn’t even used locally, but gets shipped off to Honolulu.

The workshop focused on beach restoration as one alternative for conserving and restoring Hawaii’s beaches.
The workshop explored the needs, opportunities, and challenges of making beach restoration an environmentally and economically viable
option for Hawaii through the participation of association members, invited experts, and concerned stakeholders. This white paper is largely the result of input received from members, attendees, and invited
presenters through discussion and breakout sessions, which were part of the workshop.
